Shehzad Poonawalla’s resignation from the BJP marks another major turn in a political journey that has already crossed party lines.
The 38-year-old politician and lawyer became a familiar national political figure after moving from the Congress camp to the BJP and emerging as one of the ruling party’s prominent television spokespersons. Now, he has decided to leave the BJP’s organisational structure, citing pressing personal and financial circumstances.
Poonawalla announced his latest resignation on August 17, 2026. He asked BJP president Nitin Nabin to accept his resignation and relieve him from his responsibilities as national spokesperson and from active primary membership.
The latest resignation follows an earlier attempt on July 30. The party reportedly did not accept the first resignation and asked Poonawalla to reconsider. He has now said that, after long and careful thought, he has reached a final decision.
Poonawalla’s political career became nationally visible through his criticism of the Congress. His objections to the party’s internal leadership and election process helped establish him as a prominent political voice.
He eventually joined the BJP in late 2021. After joining, he became one of the party’s most visible Muslim faces and regularly represented the BJP in national television debates.
His communication role extended beyond television. He was also associated with the BJP’s Delhi IT and social media responsibilities, giving him a role in the party’s digital communication strategy.
Over the years, Poonawalla became known for strongly defending Prime Minister Narendra Modi and challenging opposition leaders, particularly Congress figures. His regular appearances made him a recognisable BJP spokesperson among television audiences.
His decision to leave therefore marks a significant personal change.
Yet Poonawalla’s latest statement does not suggest that he has abandoned his political beliefs. He has specifically said that he will continue supporting the vision and work of Prime Minister Modi and the BJP wherever possible.
He has also thanked several senior BJP leaders, including Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Nabin and B L Santosh. His letter emphasised gratitude for the guidance, respect and platform he received during his time with the party.
Poonawalla has explained that pressing financial and personal circumstances are forcing him to make a professional change. He has said that he intends to move into the private sector.
He also referred to recent events involving certain unnamed individuals. Those developments, he said, reinforced his earlier decision to resign. However, because he did not publicly provide specific details, the exact circumstances remain unclear.
The resignation is consequently best understood as a personal and professional decision based on the information currently available.
Poonawalla’s departure also demonstrates how political careers can move between formal party responsibilities and broader political identities. Although he will no longer hold an official BJP role if the resignation is accepted, he has indicated that his support for Modi and the BJP’s broader vision will continue.
There is currently no indication that he plans to join another political party immediately. His stated next step is the private sector.
Whether he eventually returns to electoral politics, works as a political commentator or takes on a completely different professional role remains to be seen.
For now, Poonawalla’s journey from Congress critic to BJP spokesperson and finally to a departure from active party membership has entered a new chapter.
His latest decision is being presented not as a rejection of his political ideology but as a response to pressing personal and financial circumstances. The coming period will determine how this transition shapes his public life.
