Following the launch of Operation Sindoor, Germany has publicly reinforced its support for India’s right to self-defense in response to acts of terrorism. The operation was carried out after the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, and involved targeted strikes on terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Germany’s firm backing signifies the growing depth of the strategic relationship between the two nations.
In a coordinated diplomatic effort, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul spoke with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as well as France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. During the discussions, the leaders reaffirmed a shared stance on maintaining a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism. Their dialogue emphasized the need for unified global action against cross-border terrorist threats.
The European Union, of which Germany is a key member, also released a statement denouncing the Pahalgam attack. The EU declared its support for every country’s inherent right to protect its citizens and sovereignty against terrorism. The statement emphasized that terrorism cannot be legitimized under any circumstances and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.
Germany’s expression of support has extended beyond words. It reflects broader momentum in India-Germany defense ties. The two nations have been exploring opportunities for joint defense ventures, including co-development of military hardware and arms procurement. Germany has shown a willingness to partner with India in advancing defense technologies and has proposed initiatives for shared innovation in this field.
Operation Sindoor also showcased India’s growing defense self-reliance. According to Samir V. Kamat, Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian-made weapon systems used during the operation outperformed Chinese-manufactured systems deployed by adversaries. This success has highlighted the significant progress India has made in indigenous defense development.
Germany’s clear and consistent support for India following Operation Sindoor underscores its commitment to international peace and the global fight against terrorism. As New Delhi and Berlin continue to deepen their strategic engagement, enhanced collaboration in defense and security is expected to play a crucial role in bolstering regional and global stability.
