State Seeks Central Investigation
The Bihar government has recommended a CBI probe into the death of a young NEET aspirant in Patna, following persistent allegations by her family that the case was mishandled and facts were suppressed. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has written to the Union Government, seeking the transfer of the investigation to the central agency to ensure transparency and restore public confidence.
Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Samrat Choudhary announced the decision, stating that the seriousness of the allegations and the public concern surrounding the case made an independent investigation necessary.
What Happened
The NEET aspirant, a teenager from Jehanabad district, was found unconscious in her room at Shambhu Girls’ Hostel in Patna’s Chitragupt Nagar area earlier this month. She was rushed to a private hospital, where she remained in a coma for several days before succumbing to her condition.
The incident immediately triggered questions over the circumstances leading to her death, especially after the initial police assessment hinted at suicide. The family, however, rejected this version from the outset.
Family Stands by Cover-Up Allegations
The victim’s family has consistently alleged that crucial evidence was ignored and that the local police attempted to downplay the case. They have pointed to findings in the post-mortem report and forensic observations that, according to them, raise serious doubts about the suicide theory.
Family members have demanded accountability, saying their daughter was under immense academic pressure but had shown no signs of taking such an extreme step. They have also expressed distrust in the state police investigation, claiming it lacked sensitivity and urgency.
Public Outcry and Political Pressure
The case sparked widespread outrage in Bihar, with protests by student groups, civil society organisations, and political leaders. Opposition parties accused the state government of shielding those responsible and demanded an impartial probe under judicial supervision.
As pressure mounted, the state government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and made arrests in connection with the case. However, these steps failed to satisfy the family and protestors, who continued to insist on a central investigation.
Government’s Stand
Defending the move to recommend a CBI probe, the Bihar government said it was committed to ensuring justice and had nothing to hide. Officials maintained that handing the case to the CBI would remove any doubts about bias and help uncover the truth.
Under the law, the CBI can begin its investigation only after receiving formal approval from the Centre, as policing is a state subject.
What Lies Ahead
The recommendation for a CBI probe marks a significant development in a case that has drawn national attention. As the Centre considers the request, the family continues to seek a fair and thorough investigation.
The outcome of the probe is expected to play a crucial role in addressing concerns over student safety, institutional accountability, and public trust in law enforcement in Bihar.
