A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Israel triggered a major aviation security alert on Wednesday after a violent incident involving the pilots forced the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia. The flight eventually landed safely in Tabuk, while both pilots were taken to hospital with injuries.
The aircraft, Flight FZ1073, was flying toward Tel Aviv when the emergency developed. The plane’s flight path changed significantly, and tracking data showed a rapid descent. Reuters reported that the aircraft dropped almost 14,000 feet within less than 30 seconds.
Soon after the sudden descent, emergency signals were transmitted. One of the signals reportedly indicated possible unlawful interference with the aircraft. The alert was particularly serious because the aircraft was carrying Israeli passengers and was bound for Israel.
Israeli authorities quickly treated the situation as a potential security threat. AP reported that Israeli fighter aircraft were scrambled amid fears that the aircraft might have been hijacked. The response reflected the sensitivity surrounding Israel-bound aviation and the country’s long-standing focus on aviation security.
The aircraft did not continue to Tel Aviv. Instead, it diverted toward Saudi Arabia and eventually landed at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The cause of the emergency was linked by officials to an altercation inside the cockpit. Reuters reported that Israeli officials believed the co-pilot had stabbed the captain. According to the officials, cabin crew members entered the cockpit and helped take control of the aircraft.
The reports created a rapidly changing picture of what had happened. An Israeli official initially described the situation as an incident rather than a conventional hijacking. Later, other officials said they were assessing it as a possible attempted terrorist attack.
The investigation was still underway, and officials had not publicly established a final motive. Israeli media reports also contained conflicting information regarding the identities and nationalities of the pilots. Authorities were expected to rely on crew interviews, passenger testimony, aircraft data and communications records to reconstruct the event.
Inside the cabin, passengers reportedly experienced a period of intense fear. AP reported that people heard shouting and saw the aircraft descend sharply. A passenger account described people attempting to control an attacker while others worked to assist injured individuals.
The aircraft ultimately landed without a crash. Tabuk airport officials said they had received a distress call at approximately 8:44 a.m. local time. The plane landed around 9:45 a.m., after which both pilots were taken to hospital.
Passengers were also assisted after landing. Flydubai said everyone onboard was safe and accounted for. The airline confirmed that the aircraft had experienced an incident and said it was cooperating with authorities.
The emergency landing also demonstrated the complex aviation relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia. While the two countries do not have formal diplomatic relations, Saudi Arabia has previously allowed emergency aircraft carrying Israeli passengers to land on its territory.
The route between Dubai and Tel Aviv has become an important air link since the UAE and Israel established diplomatic relations in 2020. Flydubai operates regular services between the two destinations, making Wednesday’s incident an unusually serious disruption on an established regional route.
The investigation now faces several key questions: how the cockpit confrontation began, who initiated the violence, how the emergency signals were transmitted, how control of the aircraft was maintained and why the flight ultimately diverted to Tabuk.
For passengers, the successful landing brought an end to an alarming experience. For aviation and security officials, however, the incident remains an important case requiring detailed examination.
Authorities are expected to provide additional information as the investigation progresses and as the injured pilots are able to give their accounts.
