A Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv became the scene of a serious cockpit emergency after an alleged attack on Indian Captain Smit Machchhar.

The incident occurred aboard Flight FZ1073, carrying 174 people, including 27 children.

According to reports, a violent confrontation broke out inside the cockpit during the flight. Machchhar was reportedly attacked and seriously injured.

The aircraft then entered a sharp descent.

Passengers reportedly became aware that something was seriously wrong when the aircraft began losing altitude. Reports indicate that the plane dropped thousands of feet during the emergency.

Despite his injuries, Machchhar reportedly managed to open the cockpit door.

That allowed passengers and other crew members to enter the flight deck. They helped restrain the alleged attacker and assisted in bringing the situation under control.

Other pilots travelling on the aircraft also reportedly became involved in the emergency response.

The aircraft was eventually diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed safely in Tabuk.

The incident could have had catastrophic consequences, but the aircraft reached the ground without the reported loss of passenger life.

Machchhar, however, suffered serious injuries and required medical treatment.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said he received initial treatment at a hospital in Tabuk before being shifted to Abu Dhabi for further medical attention and recovery. Indian diplomatic officials met him and remained in contact with his family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Machchhar shortly after news of the incident emerged.

Modi described the captain as a hero and said his courage helped save hundreds of lives. He also spoke with Machchhar’s wife and parents.

While addressing the UPSC centenary celebrations, Modi said Machchhar had prevented another “9/11-like” attack. The Prime Minister’s Office subsequently published his remarks.

The reference has attracted significant attention because of the historical significance of the September 11 attacks, when hijacked commercial aircraft were used in terrorist attacks in the United States.

In the Flydubai incident, however, investigators still need to establish the complete circumstances behind the cockpit confrontation and the alleged attempt to take control of the aircraft.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials have also praised Machchhar.

Reports indicate that passengers played a major role in responding to the emergency. At least one passenger with medical expertise reportedly treated the injured captain. Others helped restrain the alleged attacker.

The aircraft’s safe diversion demonstrated the importance of coordinated action during an aviation emergency.

Machchhar’s aviation background has also received attention. He reportedly spent more than a decade working in commercial aviation, including around 11 years with SpiceJet. He served as a Senior Commander and Line Training Captain before moving to Flydubai in 2022.

As authorities investigate, the incident is likely to prompt further discussion about cockpit safety, crew protection and emergency procedures.

For now, Machchhar continues to receive medical treatment, while passengers who survived the emergency have returned safely.
