Delhi University is set to introduce a Master of Arts (MA) programme in Hindi Journalism from the upcoming academic session, marking a significant step toward promoting Indian languages and expanding opportunities for students in the field of media and communication.
The decision to launch the MA in Hindi Journalism was recently approved by the Academic Council of Delhi University. This move is aligned with the university’s broader efforts to strengthen regional language education and provide diverse academic choices in tune with the evolving landscape of media and public communication.
A Step Forward for Hindi Media
According to university officials, the new postgraduate programme is aimed at equipping students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills required in modern-day journalism, with a focus on Hindi language media. The course will cover areas such as news writing, reporting, media ethics, digital journalism, television and radio broadcasting, and investigative journalism—all in Hindi.
“Hindi journalism is an important and growing part of India’s media sector. With this new MA programme, we aim to produce skilled, ethical, and socially responsible journalists who can contribute meaningfully to the field,” said a senior faculty member from the Department of Hindi.
The curriculum has been designed to balance theoretical frameworks with hands-on training. It will also include internships, workshops with media professionals, and regular field assignments to prepare students for real-world challenges.
Admission Process and Eligibility
The MA in Hindi Journalism will be offered under the Faculty of Arts. Students with a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and proficiency in Hindi will be eligible to apply. Admission will be based on a combination of academic merit and entrance examination performance, in accordance with university norms.
More details regarding the application process, syllabus, and intake capacity will be released on the Delhi University website soon. The university is also expected to host an orientation webinar for interested students and media aspirants.
Meeting the Growing Demand
The launch of this programme comes at a time when demand for trained professionals in Hindi journalism is steadily rising. With the expansion of Hindi-language newspapers, news portals, television channels, and YouTube-based digital news platforms, the media industry is witnessing a surge in Hindi content consumption, especially in North India and Hindi-speaking regions.
Experts believe that offering formal academic training in Hindi journalism will help meet this growing need while also encouraging linguistic inclusivity in higher education.
“This is a much-needed initiative. Hindi journalism deserves the same academic space and respect as English media studies. Students from Hindi-medium backgrounds often face limited choices in postgraduate media education, and this programme fills that gap,” said Dr. Ritu Sharma, a media educator and researcher.
A Boost for NEP Implementation
The launch of the MA in Hindi Journalism is also being viewed as part of Delhi University’s efforts to implement the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes mother-tongue instruction, multilingualism, and vocational education.
The university has already introduced several undergraduate courses in Indian languages, and this new postgraduate offering is expected to pave the way for more such programmes in the future.
Students, particularly from Hindi-speaking states, have welcomed the move and expressed hope that it would open new career pathways in journalism, media production, and communication research.
