BJP’s Claims About Shivakumar’s Constitution Amendment Proposal for Muslims Are Unfounded

D.K. Shivakumar, senior Congress leader from Karnataka, has strongly refuted the BJP’s accusations that he proposed constitutional changes to extend reservations to Muslims. The BJP had raised alarm following a recent speech in which Shivakumar discussed the importance of reservations and social justice for marginalized communities, alleging that he had advocated for amendments to the Constitution.

Shivakumar, in his response, explained that his comments had been taken out of context and twisted to suit the BJP’s political narrative. He emphasized that the issue of reservations should be viewed through the lens of social justice, and that no community should be denied its due share of opportunities based on caste, religion, or economic status.

Shivakumar’s clarification aimed to quell the controversy and reassure the public that he was not seeking to alter the fundamental structure of India’s Constitution. He reminded the BJP that any proposal for changes to the Constitution would require careful deliberation and widespread consensus. The Congress leader also pointed out that his party has always supported policies that promote equal opportunities for all, regardless of religion.

The BJP, however, has continued to pursue the issue, accusing Shivakumar of appeasing the Muslim community ahead of elections. This controversy has once again highlighted the deepening divide between the Congress and BJP in Karnataka, with both parties positioning themselves as defenders of social justice and secularism.
