A major political stir erupted in Tamil Nadu today as BJP leaders, K. Annamalai and Tamilisai Soundararajan, were arrested by the police while staging a protest outside the headquarters of Tasmac, the state’s government-run liquor corporation. The protest was focused on the increasing concerns over alcohol addiction and the social problems it has caused within the state.
The Tamil Nadu BJP has been a vocal critic of the government’s heavy reliance on Tasmac for revenue generation. The party leaders argue that the state’s policies contribute significantly to social decay, with many families suffering from the consequences of alcohol dependency. Annamalai, in particular, has frequently called for the shutdown of all Tasmac outlets, alleging that they promote addiction, violence, and family breakdowns.
As BJP leaders were preparing for their demonstration, police forces quickly arrived at the scene, detained Annamalai and Soundararajan, and dispersed the growing crowd. Despite the arrests, BJP supporters were seen continuing their protest, denouncing the state’s liquor policies and expressing their discontent with the DMK-led government’s stance on alcohol sales.
In a statement, Annamalai accused the state government of turning a blind eye to the negative social and health impacts of alcohol consumption, with Tasmac outlets becoming a primary source of addiction and related crimes. Tamilisai Soundararajan also echoed these views, urging the government to prioritize public welfare over financial profits from alcohol sales.
This event has sparked heated debates among political observers, with the DMK defending its liquor policy as a necessary source of revenue for social welfare programs. Meanwhile, the BJP is expected to intensify its campaign, focusing on the adverse social implications of the state’s liquor monopolies.
