A PCR call at around 8:45 pm set off a police investigation into the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Astha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir in Delhi.
According to Delhi Police, the teenager had visited Kalkaji Mandir with a 17-year-old male friend. The two reportedly reached the temple at approximately 7 pm before going to the nearby Astha Kunj Park around 7:30 pm.
Police said three men approached the teenagers in the park. The men were reportedly between 25 and 30 years old and allegedly claimed that they were police personnel.
According to the victim’s account, the men threatened her and her friend. One of the alleged accused reportedly restrained the boy, while all three allegedly sexually assaulted the girl.
The alleged assault was subsequently reported to the police. A PCR call was received at 8:45 pm concerning an alleged rape near Kalkaji Mandir and the ISKCON Temple.
Officers from Amar Colony police station reached Astha Kunj Park. Police said the girl and her friend were located at the scene.
The girl was subsequently taken for medical examination at AIIMS. Police recorded her statement and began gathering evidence from the park.
A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act. Investigators also examined the scene with assistance from crime and forensic teams.
Police then launched an operation to identify and apprehend the alleged perpetrators. Multiple teams were reportedly formed, while CCTV footage from the surrounding areas was examined.
The investigation led police to one suspect identified as Asif. Officers reportedly received information about his presence near DM Office Road in Amar Colony.
Police said they attempted to apprehend him but that he allegedly opened fire at the police team. According to officials, the suspect fired three rounds.
One bullet reportedly hit the bulletproof jacket of Head Constable Rajesh. Police said the officer responded by firing two rounds in self-defence. One bullet struck Asif in his right leg.
The suspect was apprehended and taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment. Police also called forensic personnel to the encounter site to collect evidence and complete the necessary legal procedures.
The two other alleged suspects remained the focus of a continuing search. Investigators are examining CCTV recordings and other evidence to locate them and determine their alleged involvement.
The sequence of events is being reconstructed from the victim’s statement, police records, forensic material and available surveillance footage.
The case also illustrates the importance of promptly reporting alleged offences and preserving evidence. In this case, the PCR call allowed police to reach the location relatively soon after the alleged incident and begin an investigation.
As the case involves a minor, authorities are proceeding under the POCSO framework along with applicable criminal-law provisions.
The investigation is ongoing. The allegations made against the suspects will be examined through the criminal justice process, while police continue efforts to apprehend the remaining accused.
