In a new interview, former President Donald Trump suggested that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg played a key role in pushing forward the idea of acquiring Greenland as part of a broader Arctic security strategy. According to Trump, NATO’s concerns over Russia’s growing influence in the Arctic region were a significant factor in his administration’s pursuit of the Danish territory.
“NATO’s leaders were focused on the Arctic, and I was too,” Trump stated. “Greenland’s strategic position would have been a tremendous asset for NATO in securing the region.”
Although Stoltenberg has yet to publicly confirm his support for Trump’s proposal, Trump’s comments imply that NATO’s leadership saw the acquisition as beneficial for the alliance’s broader goals. With the Arctic becoming increasingly important for both military and economic reasons, NATO’s role in the region will likely continue to shape U.S. policy moving forward.
