Nuns Released on Bail, Kerala Sees Debate Over Who Claims Credit and Blame

Two Catholic nuns from Kerala, along with a tribal man, were recently granted conditional bail by a special NIA court in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. The trio had been arrested last month on allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversions. The court’s decision provides temporary relief while the investigation continues, but the situation has sparked intense political discussions in Kerala.

Political Reactions and Support for the Nuns

The bail granted to the nuns has triggered strong reactions from political parties in Kerala. Opposition leader V.D. Satheesan reaffirmed that the Congress and the United Democratic Front (UDF) will continue supporting the nuns in their legal battle. He accused the BJP and Bajrang Dal of opposing the bail on religious grounds and violating constitutional principles.

MLAs Roji M. John and Sajeev Joseph played key roles in advocating for the bail. Meanwhile, AICC general secretary K.C. Venugopal called on the Chhattisgarh government to drop the case, labeling the charges as unfounded and politically motivated. He further criticized BJP leaders for exploiting the issue for electoral gains.

KPCC president Sunny Joseph welcomed the bail decision but stressed that it was the judiciary’s discretion that secured it, not political pressure. He condemned the harassment faced by the nuns and their associates, allegedly by Bajrang Dal activists, and demanded legal action against the perpetrators.

The Church’s Perspective

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, president of the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council, expressed his trust in the judiciary following the bail. While acknowledging the bail as a significant step, he emphasized that the legal battle is far from over.

The Cardinal stood firmly behind the nuns, affirming their innocence and explaining that their mission was to help young women capable of making their own decisions. He cautioned against public interference in judicial processes, highlighting the importance of an independent court to deliver justice.

BJP’s Position and Political Implications

Kerala BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar denied all allegations against the two Syro-Malabar Church nuns, reaffirming the party’s commitment to their safety and support. He condemned any misconduct by groups such as Bajrang Dal, stressing that such actions are unacceptable, even if committed by affiliated organizations.

Chandrasekhar also criticized the Congress party for politicizing the issue and pointed out their role in enacting anti-conversion laws in Chhattisgarh, framing the narrative in a broader political context.

Ongoing Legal and Political Developments

The bail of the nuns has ignited a complex debate involving legal proceedings, political rivalries, and religious sentiments in Kerala. While the court has granted temporary freedom, the case continues to evolve, with various political and religious factions actively weighing in.

This situation remains a highly sensitive and divisive issue, with ongoing discussions about justice, religious freedom, and political motives dominating public discourse.
