A group of young people travelling in a BMW suffered a devastating accident on Mumbai’s Coastal Road early Sunday, with three occupants dying and one critically injured after the vehicle plunged from a bridge.
The accident occurred around 5:20 a.m. as the BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. Police said the driver allegedly lost control near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College.
CCTV footage recorded the vehicle approaching the location at high speed. It then crashed through the roadside barrier and fell from the elevated road into an under-construction parking area.
The BMW was severely damaged in the impact. Emergency personnel rescued the occupants and took them to Nair Hospital.
Three of the four occupants were declared dead at the hospital. The victims included 21-year-old Shanay Gajjal and 17-year-old Dhairya Seth. Authorities said a third deceased passenger was believed to be around 25 years old, while his identity was still being confirmed.
The fourth occupant, believed to be approximately 20, suffered critical injuries and was admitted to the hospital’s trauma ward.
The accident has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Police are examining the CCTV footage as well as evidence from the scene.
The footage could help authorities determine how quickly the vehicle was travelling and when the driver appeared to lose control. It may also help investigators understand the vehicle’s trajectory immediately before it hit the barrier.
No final conclusion has yet been announced regarding the exact cause of the accident.
The Coastal Road is among Mumbai’s major modern road projects. It was developed to improve connectivity and reduce travelling time between parts of South Mumbai and the western suburbs.
The road operates under specific restrictions. According to NDTV, the main carriageway has a speed limit of up to 80 kmph, while the limit is reduced to 60 kmph in the twin undersea tunnels and 40 kmph on ramps, curves and interchanges.
Such restrictions are intended to account for different road conditions and geometry. Drivers are required to follow the posted limits and other regulations throughout the corridor.
The fatal accident has once again highlighted the consequences that can result from losing control of a vehicle on an elevated road.
