The third day of the Monsoon Session in Parliament was largely disrupted as strong protests by the Opposition led to multiple adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The demonstrations were primarily fueled by anger over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar, as well as the recent resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and a demand for discussion on “Operation Sindoor.”
Early Disruptions: Parliament Grinds to a Halt
From the moment proceedings began at 11:00 AM, the day was marked by turmoil. Opposition MPs began shouting slogans and brandishing placards inside both Houses, defying parliamentary norms. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla condemned the behavior, emphasizing that Parliament is meant for meaningful discussion, not protests. He also warned that such actions could invite disciplinary measures.
Despite this warning, disruptions continued, prompting both Houses to be adjourned soon after assembly. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha briefly reconvened at noon, only to be adjourned again until 2:00 PM due to persistent commotion.
Main Flashpoint: Voter Roll Revision in Bihar
The key issue behind the protests was the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar. The Opposition alleged that the move would unjustly remove names of marginalized voters — including Dalits, backward castes, Muslims, and the economically disadvantaged — from the electoral list.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion accusing the government of intentionally disenfranchising these communities. He called the action part of a “Manuwadi mindset,” aimed at silencing weaker sections of society. Priyanka Gandhi echoed similar sentiments, accusing the government of attempting to “murder democracy.”
Opposition parties, including members of the INDIA bloc and RJD, staged protests outside the Parliament’s Makar Dwar entrance. Many MPs wore black clothes and armbands in symbolic defiance of the SIR order.
Other Demands: Operation Sindoor and Vice President’s Resignation
In addition to the SIR issue, the Opposition raised questions over the government’s counter-terror operation named “Operation Sindoor” launched in response to the Pahalgam attack. They demanded a full parliamentary debate on national security strategy.
Another major issue that contributed to the uproar was the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. Opposition leaders claimed the official reason of health concerns was questionable, and they suspected political motives behind his departure. Parties from Jharkhand’s ruling alliance demanded clarification on Dhankhar’s resignation and its implications.
Government Pushes Ahead with Legislative Agenda
Despite the disruptions, the government tabled several important bills in an attempt to continue with legislative work. Among them were:
- The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 – Aimed at regulating sports bodies, including the BCCI.
- The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025
- Four other key bills that were originally scheduled for debate.
- A special 9-hour discussion window allocated for Operation Sindoor.
However, these legislative efforts were largely overshadowed by ongoing protests inside both Houses.
Persistent Tensions Expected in the Afternoon
With the Parliament set to resume at 2:00 PM, tensions showed no sign of easing. The Opposition remained firm in their demand to debate the voter roll issue and demanded full transparency regarding the Vice President’s resignation.
Government leaders criticized the protests, labeling them as “leader-centric drama.” BJP members accused the Congress and its allies of derailing the session’s productivity for political gain.
Parliament at a Crossroads
Day 3 of the Monsoon Session clearly reflected the deep political divide. While the government aimed to proceed with its legislative agenda, the Opposition used every tool at its disposal to force attention on voter suppression, national security, and constitutional accountability.
The rest of the session is expected to remain tense, as both sides prepare for more intense showdowns in the coming days.
